The Importance of Self Talk

I have learned a lot over the last few years as I have jumped into the world of being an independent artist.  I've learned about the music business, the creative process, and my own capacity.  I have learned that there are different phases in the music making process.  Writing songs is just the beginning.  There is so much that takes place between completing the songwriting and actually releasing music into the world...and I have so much more to learn!

One thing I have been focused on lately is my self talk.  Like many artists, I can be notoriously hard on myself.  It is very easy to fall into the trap of comparing myself to other artists, which is an unhealthy and ultimately fruitless endeavour.  Human beings are all so beautifully unique and so are our creative expressions.

For about 5 years now, really since I wrote my first album and began the process of figuring it all out, I have told myself (and many others) that beyond writing the songs, I just don't know what I am doing.  I'm not a business person, I'm a teacher!  My brain just does not work that way.  If only I could afford to hire someone else to do all this stuff for me...managing, publicity, marketing...It's just not my thing.

There is a great deal of truth in those statements, but I have decided that I need to adjust my mindset.  I need to check the way I talk to myself and about myself.  Making the conscious decision to be more aware of my self talk has been challenging, but it has also been empowering.  Here are my revised self messages;

I am learning!

I am a teacher who is also a business person!

My brain is amazing and I can learn to do new things!

I am taking ownership of my music career and putting my heart into all that I do!

What about you?  What are some positive messages you have been telling yourself, or what would you like to start telling yourself?  I'd love to know!
